The reason for this error is that you are running a very old Linux system. The X window libraries are not compatible with the one I used to compile EMAN1.8. If you don't want to upgrade your Linux, you can download the daily release of EMAN. It is built on an old Linux system. This daily release copy will not run on most current Linux system. That's the reason we build the EMAN 1.8 binary on a newer system to cover current Linux release and some older system (but not too old).
